Sea Turtle Information Center Inaugurate with Assistance from US

On June 16, 2006, Ambassador Walkley in conjunction with Vice Prime Minister Georgette Koko, French Ambassador, Jean-Marc Simon, and others inaugurated the Pongara Sea Turtle Information Center established by the NGO Aventures Sans Frontières (ASF). The information center is located on the edge of Pongara National Park, a prime leatherback turtle nesting site.  The center will serve groups of tourists and school students who come to observe nesting sea turtles and to learn about the park ecosystem.

The US Embassy in Libreville in partnership with the Canadian and French embassies contributed to the establishment of the center and is proud to play a part in the country’s education and conservation efforts. One of the main priorities of the United States in Gabon is to support conservation efforts within the Congo Basin region, the second largest tropical forest in the world. The US embassy especially applauds the efforts of the Gabonese government’s commitment to the preservation of its rich natural heritage and biodiversity.
