The HSV Swift in Port-Gentil August 2009

The United States in an effort to optimize maritime security and safety in the Golf of Guinea by increasing African Maritime capacities have recently launched a new initiative called the Africa Partnership Maritime Station. APS is a an education center on board an american ship.

The HSV Swift which is a part of APS arrived in Port-Gentil on Tuesday August 18 2009 for a 3 day stopover at this Gabonese port. During the stop, the personnel of the swift discussed different strategies with the Gabonese government, the army and the local authorities on protection of the waters and maritime security and safety. They also organized exercises with the Gabonese Navy.

APS is a multinational effort that provides training on the most recent techniques important to maritime professionals in 9 West African countries to fight illegal fishing, maritime attacks and trafficking of persons.

After the training, the Gabonese navy received participation awards and a reception was held on board for the dignitaries of Port-Gentil.
