Non-Immigrant Visas

General Information

New Visa Application Requirement

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Libreville requests all non-immigrant visa applicants to use the Electronic Visa Application Form (EVAF) found at http://evisaforms.state.gov/. Using this form will allow for faster processing of your application.

As a result of a new worldwide regulation, the Embassy will no longer provide the paper DS-156 non-immigrant visa application form effective October 16, 2006.

Effective October 30, 2006, all non-immigrant visa applicants will be required to present the EVAF.  The electronic application must be completed on the computer screen via the internet, printed, then signed and presented at the Consular Section at the time of the interview.  Applicants who arrive at the section without the EVAF will not be interviewed and will have to reschedule their interview appointments.

The Embassy can provide a list of possible Internet cafes in Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe.

Appointment Process

Non-immigrant visas will be processed by appointment only every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00am-12:30pm.  Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time to allow for security and administrative processing.  Persons with an appointment wishing to travel for business, tourism, studies, etc. may come at this time.  Eligibility requirements and necessary documentation vary for each visa type.  If a visa is issued, it will be ready for pick-up the following day after 10:00am.  With few exceptions, all applicants must appear in person for the interview.

To request a non-immigrant visa appointment, please e-mail us at usvisalibreville@state.gov and state:

  • Your last name and first name (as it appears in your passport);
  • Dates you are traveling (if more than one person is traveling, state how many people need an appoointment, and give the last names and first names of those requiring non-immigrant visas); and
  • Provide a telephone number where you can be reached most of the time.

Alternatively, you may phone the Consular Section at +241-76-20-03/04 ext. 4281 and provide the details requested.

There is a $131 USD (payable in CFA or US dollars) non-refundable processing fee per applicant. An additional reciprocity visa issuance fee may also apply depending on the nationality of the applicant.

Every applicant must complete an application form (DS-156) and present one recent (37 mm X 37 mm) full-face photograph. Male applicants between 16 and 45 years of age must complete an additional form (DS-157).  Applicants must also present a passport valid for at least six months from the time of planned entry into the US.  All non-Gabonese citizens should present a valid "Carte de Sejour."

European Union citizens and others who possess a machine-readable passport with a photo digitized passport photo may enter the US without a visa depending on the purpose of the travel, length of stay and type of passport.  For more information see the Visa Waiver Program.

Visas for Business / Tourism

The "visitor" visa is a nonimmigrant visa for persons desiring to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1) or for pleasure or medical treatment (B-2). Examples include travel to the US to: consult with business associates, attend a conference, negotiate a contract, vacation, visit with friends or relatives, etc.  The visa allows a foreign citizen, to travel to the United States port-of entry and request permission of the US immigration inspector to enter the US.

Under US law, every B1/B2 applicant is presumed to be an intending immigrant.  Therefore, to overcome this presumption, the applicant must demonstrate:

  • The purpose of the trip is for business, pleasure or medical treatment;
  • That the intended period of stay is for a specific, limited duration;
  • Evidence of funds to cover expenses in the US;
  • Evidence of compelling social and economic ties abroad; and
  • The presence of a residence abroad, which the applicant does not intend to abandon.

The following documents may be helpful in demonstrating the above:

  • Marriage and/or birth certificates (when spouses or children are included);
  • Letters from individuals or organizations in the U.S. sponsoring or arranging the trip;
  • Letter from employer indicating position, monthly salary, length of employment and vacation time approved for travel;
  • Pay stubs covering the last three months of employment;
  • Official bank statements for the last 3 months that arrive by mail monthly;
  • Proof of home or property ownership (if applicable).
