Regional Environmental Office

US Embassy Libreville houses a Regional Environmental Hub office, which coordinates United States government environmental policy, reporting and activities for 24 West and Central African countries. In response to the increasingly regional character of many international ocean, environmental, science and health issues, the Department has established regional "Hub" offices in 12 embassies around the world where these issues are particularly important. Hubs use environmental and scientific issues as a way to promote regional cooperation, information exchange and dialogue among governments to address regional problems which are transboundary in nature. By facilitating a multilateral approach, Hubs can often achieve more effective results than the sum of efforts in individual countries.

Some of the specific issues that the West and Central Africa Environmental Hub covers include the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, combatting wildlife trafficking, promoting transboundary biodiversity conservation and sound management of fisheries and shared marine resources. Countries covered by the Libreville Hub include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Rep., Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
